Environmental, organizational and technological factors are creating a highly competitive business environment in which customers are the focal point. Furthermore, these factors can change quickly, sometimes in an unpredictable manner. Therefore, companies need to react frequently and quickly to both the problems and the opportunities resulting from this new business environment. Because of the pace of change and the degree of uncertainty in tomorrows competitive environment are expected to accelerate, organizations are going to operate under increasing pressure to produce more, using fewer customers.

We have already seen organizations such as IBM, General Motors going through major restructuring, eliminating many jobs during the early 1990s in an attempt to get “Lean and Mean” and to be competitive in the market place. These happen merely because of business pressures. In order to maintain or succeed (or even to survive) in this dynamic world, companies must take not only traditional actions such as lowering cost, but also innovative activities such as empowering employees as entry to strategic activities turning out to be qualitative output. A response can be a reaction to a pressure already in existence, or it can be an initiative that will defend an organization against all future pressures. It can also be an activity that exploits an opportunity created by changing conditions. In some cases IT and Quality is the only solution to these business pressures. The relationship between business pressures, organizational responses and IT and Quality is the new world of Business.

To understand role of IT and Quality in today’s organization, it is useful to review the major business environment factors that create pressure on organizations. The business environment refers to the social, legal, economic, physical and political factors that effect business activities. Significant changes in any part of this environment are likely to create pressures on organizations. The Major Business Pressures are Market Pressures– A global and strong competition, unique workforce and powerful business model can characterize today’s market. Some of the market pressures can be recalled as “Global Economy and Competition”, Changing nature of Work Force, Powerful Customers. While these add to the chaos of Business Pressures, other Technology Pressures like Technology innovation and obsolescence, Information overload add to the whole scenario. To further put pressure Social pressures like Social responsibility, Government regulations, Ethical issues, Political Pressures add heavy on the overall business.

In order to understand the impact of the business pressures on organization which are a part of today’s business there are robust ways as response by any organization. Out of these components, Quality and IT the major one is surrounded by environment. These components are in a stable condition, called equilibrium, as long as no significant change occurs in the environment or in any of the components. However, as soon as a significant change occurs, the system becomes unstable and it is necessary to adjust some or all of the internal components. The internal components are interrelated. For example, a significant change in an organizations strategy may create a change in the corporate structure. Unstable organizations may be unable to excel or even survive, therefore organizations need to respond by what we call critical response activities. All such activities deal not only with long term strategies, but also with the basic daily business activities.

Traditional response may not work with new problems, so many old solutions need to be modified, supplemented, or eliminated. Organizations can also take proactive measures to create a change in market place. Such activities also include exploiting opportunities created by the external pressures. Organizations major response are divided here into five categories : strategic systems for competitive advantage-To increase the market share, Continuous improvement efforts-To improve their productivity and Quality, Business process reengineering- A major innovation in the organizations structure and the way it conducts its business, Business alliances- Even with competitors , at times it becomes beneficial for eg General Motors and Ford created a joint venture to explore electronic commerce applications. , and Electronic commerce- Doing business electronically is the newest and perhaps most promising strategy that many companies pursue.
